Secure emails with manual credit card processing
This option is well suited for businesses with fewer than 30 transactions per day. If you already have a credit card terminal it is also a good way to start - until your volume picks up.

  • Build your order form: $150-$400
  • Buy your secure encryption key: $125 USD per year from www.thawte.com. Thawte SSL certificates will enable the SSL on your web server, giving your web customers the ability to communicate securely with you via order forms. SSL security makes eavesdropping on your web traffic almost impossible.
  • Host your secure order form. Usually there will be a set up fee (about $275) and a monthly fee for hosting the encryption key (about $35/month).
  • Receive secure orders by encrypted email that include credit card information (unless the customer pays by check or money order)
  • Process each order through your credit card merchant terminal. Usually there will be a fee for renting the credit card terminal and a fee for the bank account. There might also be a variety of other bank and credit card fees. Look for the bank that best suits your needs.
  • You will need a merchant account number for each credit card that you accept.
  • To use your current merchant accounts you must set them up with a "card not present" or MOTO (mail-order-telephone-order) status.
  • Try to find a bank representative who specializes in merchant accounts for internet sales.
